'Sony Ericsson making PSP smartphone'

NEW DELHI: Sony Playstation is coming to smartphones. According to reports, Sony Ericsson is working on a PSP Go-like smartphone that will run on GoogleAndroid 3.0.

Engadget describes it as a cross between the Samsung Captivate and Sony's own ultraportable PSP Go games handheld.

According to the report, it is a landscape slider with game controls in place of the typical QWERTY keyboard. The D-pad is here, but instead of the small joystick, the device will have what was described as a "long touch pad" for analog controls, along with standard PSP buttons and shoulder buttons. The phone has a large display, described as being between 3.7 and 4.1 inches with WVGA or better resolution, a 5 megapixel camera that we're told might not be final, and it'll likely have a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU on board. The phone is mostly black with some silver highlights, and the gamepad area is white / silver in colour. Apparently it is currently branded as a Xperia device, but it looks like it will carry PlayStation branding as well."

Engadget says that the device is not only in development but could be also hit retail stores before the end of 2010.

Microsoft Xbox outsells Wii, Sony PS3

TOKYO: Microsoft Corp’s Xbox 360 outsold Nintendo Co’s Wii last month, becoming the top selling video-game console in the US for the first time in almost three years, after introducing a model equipped with wireless-Internet.

Sales of the Xbox 360 more than doubled to 443,500 units, regaining the top spot for the first time since September 2007, Port Washington, New York-based researcherNPD Group Inc said in a statement.

Consumers bought 253,900 Wii players, little changed from a year ago, while sales of Sony Corp’s PlayStation 3 gained 76 per cent to 214,500 units.

“Xbox 360 was the top-selling hardware platform for the month, driven by sales of the new slim format,” Anita Frazier, an NPD analyst, said in the statement. The console last occupied the top sales spot when Microsoft released its “Halo 3” exclusive title almost three years ago, Frazier said.

The demand for Xbox 360 bolstered overall sales of hardware 12 per cent last month, helping offset the 8 per cent decline in software revenue, the report said.

Sony and Microsoft hope to increase sales by introducing motion controllers later this year, while Nintendo will upgrade its handheld-player lineup with a model allowing users to see 3D images without wearing special glasses.

‘NCAA Football 11’
Sales of Nintendo’s DS portable player fell 26 per cent to 398,400 last month, NPD said. Sony’s PlayStation Portable handheld sold 84,000 units, a 32 per cent plunge from a year earlier, it said.

The best-selling game in July was “NCAA Football 11” from Electronic Arts Inc, which sold 368,000 copies for the Xbox and 298,800 copies for PS3, NPD said. PC game sales more than doubled as retail purchases of “StarCraft II” from Activision Blizzard Inc. totaled 721,000 units.

Microsoft in June shipped a new Xbox machine that was slimmer and quieter than its predecessor and had built-in Wi-Fi. The console sells for $299.99, the same as the old model.

Advertisers to spend $1.28 bn on Facebook

SAN FRANCISCO:  Internet research firm eMarketer has reported that advertisers are flocking to Facebook and will spend more than a billion dollars at the world's top online social network.

"Brand advertisers are making Facebook a core buy," said eMarketer senior analyst Debra Aho Williamson.

"Ad spending is building quickly and the mass audience is one that marketers cannot ignore any longer."

Facebook membership topped 500 million people in July and it is not unusual for users of the service to spend hours weekly, if not daily, at the website.

Research by eMarketer indicated that advertisers will spend 1.28 billion dollars worldwide trying to get pitches to Facebook members.

Facebook's success in luring ads is due in part to a "self-serve" software tool that lets advertisers create their own virtual pitches and target them based on basic demographics such as age or gender.

The tool accounts for half of the ads placed at Facebook, according to eMarketer.

Meanwhile, advertising revenue at News Corp-owned social networking service MySpace was expected to slip to 297 million dollars, a 14 percent drop from the 347 million dollars taken in worldwide last year, the market tracker said.

A New program for Facebook to Delete Abuse from Strangers

LONDON: Social networking website Facebook has promised to develop a new security measures that will automatically delete offensive messages sent by strangers.
Engineers at Facebook are now working on new systems to combat the growing trend, known as "trolling", where anonymous users "bombard" victims with offensive messages or abuse, the Telegraph reported.
According to the report, "trolls" have targeted a number of "tribute" pages including those in memory of the Cumbria shootings victims and soldiers who died in Afghanistan. Currently, Facebook users can manually delete abusive messages, but officials said the new system would delete the offensive content automatically.
Administrators of such sites will also be given advice on how to cope with "trolls" and access to new tools, they said.
A Facebook spokesman said that while the company already employed "robust" systems, engineers were developing new programmes to combat the threat. "Because 'trolls' tend to set up fake accounts, we employ robust systems to flag and block them based on name and anomalous site activity," he said.
Jim Gamble, the chief executive of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), who has been working with Facebook to combat cyber bullying, welcomed the news.
Gamble said the "ClickCEOP" application on Facebook had been downloaded more than 10,000 times since the button's launch last month. The application gives users a direct link to advice, help and the ability to report cyber problems to the centre.
